2005 Recap:
A veteran of New Japan, El Samurai played the role of mentor in 2005,
usually wrestling towards the bottom of the card in tag matches (or
singles matches) with young lions. His win/loss record was not
bad, but he was wrestling the lowest wrestlers on the totem pole.
In the Best of the Super Jr. Tournament, El Samurai came in 4th place
(of seven) in his bracket. Towards the end of 2005, Samurai occasionally
tagged with his old friend and rival Jushin Liger.
2006 Recap:
El Samurai revived himself in 2006, as he won his first gold in almost
five years as he teamed with Ryusuke Taguchi on February 19th to win
the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. At the Best of the Super
Jr. Tournament, El Samurai did well and had victories over Taguchi and
Sangre Azteca, but came in third place in his bracket. El Samurai and
Taguchi would lose the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship to
Jado and Gedo on July 8th after two successful defenses. El Samurai
kept a low profile for the last half of 2006, mostly wrestling towards
the beginning of cards and helping the younger wrestlers.
2007 Recap:
In 2007, El Samurai continued to keep a low profile and helped mold
the next generation of stars. After a loss to Yujiro early in the year,
El Samurai feuded off and on with CTU for much of the spring. At the
Best of the Super Jr. Tournament El Samurai picked up wins over BxB
Hulk and Kanemoto but came in fifth place in his bracket. El Samurai
was injured in late summer and did not wrestle for the rest of the year.
