In 1990, Hase and Kensuke Sasaki had been wrestling for only four years and were still considered secondary wrestlers as they continued training to lead New Japan. On November 1st, 1990 they challenged Mutoh and Chono in their first attempt to win a major New Japan heavyweight championship. Even though they were heavy underdogs, Sasaki and Hase shocked everyone when they picked up the win and brought home the gold. They would successfully defend the titles twice before losing them, but then a few months later they won the titles again. Even though Hase and Sasaki were not a tag team for long, their short stint catapulted both of them up the card and gained them respect from the fans of New Japan.
