Sting's relationship with the Great Muta in WCW carried over to Japan after Muta left WCW in 1990, as they wrestled against each other as well as teamed together in New Japan during the early 90s. Sting would lose to Antonio Inoki in 1995, and would be defeated by Shiro Koshinaka in 1996 for his last appearance in Japan.
