2009 Recap:
To the shock of many, at Keiji Mutoh's Festival on June 10th of 2009, Funaki announced that he would be returning to professional wrestling on August 30th to celebrate Mutoh's 25th Anniversary. After the show, in which Funaki had a well received and entertaining match, it was announced that Funaki had signed a contract to stay in All Japan. Funaki didn't just wrestle on special shows, but he toured as well as he frequently faced off against his old nemesis Minoru Suzuki. In the Real World Tag League, Funaki teamed with Keiji Mutoh and together they won the tournament by defeating Suwama and Kono in the finals. At 40 years old Funaki clearly still has what it takes to win in the ring, although no one knows for sure how long he will remain in the All Japan ring.
